Whiskey. Rum. Vodka. Tequila. Wine.
These are some among the long list of liquors that people from all ages (18+) love to indulge in. Of course, aside from the fact that alcohol is known as liquid courage, there are multiple other reasons as to why many enjoy drinking it – and it might be absurd if we include acquiring health benefits on the top of the list. You see, we are all told that alcohol drinking is like taking a short-cut to one’s own coffin; but you’re here for a different news.
As absurd as it may sound, according to studies, alcohol also has remarkable health benefits for your body, and it just might be that your favorite booze possesses the most of those. Yes, red wine is the healthiest alcohol drink ever! Here’s why:
Has anti-inflammatory property
Wine contains a compound called resveratrol, which has been found to have both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Chronic inflammation can lead to your immune system attacking healthy tissue and organs in your body over time. Prolonged chronic inflammation, if left untreated, can put you at risk for diseases including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Many foods help reduce inflammation, and multiple studies suggest wine to be one of them.
According to the National Center of Biotechnology Information, resveratrol seems to also ease joint pain, help with diabetes, extend lifespan of various organisms, and help with cancer.
Good for the heart
Red wine, when consumed in moderation, has been shown to be beneficial to the heart. However, drinking too much red wine, or any alcohol for that matter, is particularly harmful and can raise your risk of heart disease.
Moderate red wine drinking can also raise the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol," in our blood, which is linked to a lower risk of heart disease. HDL cholesterol is beneficial because it aids in the removal of excess LDL cholesterol from blood vessels.
As reported by a Danish study, people who drank low-to-moderate amounts of wine were less likely to die from heart disease or stroke than those who drank beer or other liquors.
Less occurrence of neurodegenerative disorders
When compared to people who abstain or drink excessively, epidemiologic studies from a variety of populations show that people who drink moderate amounts of wine on a daily basis had a lower risk of all-cause and, in particular, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative mortality. Apart from the alcohol in the wine, additional trace chemicals and polyphenolic compounds found in wine and grapes, such as resveratrol, have neuroprotective and cardioprotective properties.
Progressive neuronal malfunction and resulting behavioral dysfunction characterize neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Accordingly, light/moderate wine drinkers are less likely to develop age-related cognitive decline and/or dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Packed with antioxidants
Wine is one of the many antioxidant-rich meals and beverages available. Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. An imbalance between antioxidants and unstable chemicals known as free radicals causes oxidative stress, which can damage your cells. Because red wine grapes contain more antioxidants than white grape types, consuming red wine may boost your blood antioxidant levels more than white wine.
Various studies proved that there are more advantages in wine than in any other alcoholic drinks. Now, you can enjoy a good glass of wine minus all unnecessary guilt you used to bear. However, this must never be neglected: while moderate wine consumption may be beneficial to one's health, excessive alcohol consumption can be harmful; and certain people and groups, such as those prohibited by their doctors, should abstain from consuming alcohol. In maintaining a healthy lifestyle, physical constitution, eating habits, exercise, and genetics will always play a role. Yet, if you enjoy drinking wine, the good news is that you might get all these amazing health benefits if consumed in control.
